At Hlumelelisa, we strive to form strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations so that we can learn and grow from one another. Ryan and Liza of Ekukhanyeni visited with our class of 2010 at our training facility and nursery at Leeuwkop earlier this month. Our visitors captivated the class with their breadth of knowledge on permaculture design and sustainable farming techniques.
Ekukhanyeni means “Home of Light and Hope” and is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on community upliftment in poverty stricken informal settlements around Johannesburg. Ekukhanyeni uses sustainable technologies and lifestyles education to help adults in these zones to achieve and maintain food and nutrition security in ways that do not negatively affect natural resources. The project creates self-sustaining communities through its green and holistic design approach to community development.
